About Me
After doing a PhD in Prehistory and Archaeology at the University of Sheffield, based on a lot of literature as well as work done in Northwest Botswana, I moved back to Africa to work in the Zambezi Valley among the BaTonga people about whom I had learned so much. For transport in Binga District, Zimbabwe, around which I travelled extensively, I found that I needed donkeys, and recommended donkeys as transport for the setting up of an outreach library for the district (which alas never happened there in the end). In no time at all I found myself attending the first international 'colloquium' dealing with donkeys, and writing a manual for Zimbabwe's Department of Agriculture. After that I was no longer an archaeologist but a donkey specialist, and have remained so ever since, attending conferences on working animals and sustainable farming, and publishing lots of papers and looking at the future of this remarkable animal that, for more than 6000 years has worked so willingly for humans. When I had to move back to South Africa, the greater part of my own little herd of donkeys walked down to be with me, and we've engaged in many adventures. I now have a small training centre where donkey owners can be trained to use their animals better, but I also advise various NGOs on the use of donkeys and how this may be changed. A great challenge in southern Africa is the way donkeys are hitched to wheeled vehicles, traditional because adopted from horse technology, but very damaging to donkeys. There is also much to be done to overcome attitudes that see donkeys as representing backward technologies, instead of what they truly are: an animal of the future, superior in many ways to most other working animals. Unfortunately this does not keep the wolf from the door, so I earn by living my English-language copy editing, when I can. Connected to the world mainly by internet, my animals and I inhabit an enchanting slice of bush on the Sand River not far south of the Limpopo, and welcome visitors. |

About Me
I am PhD in organic chemistry/Natural Products/SC-CO2 and have worked for more than 26 years in pharmaceuticals and Food industries as senior scientist and R&D Manager. I have my exposure to pharmacopoeia, FDA and international audits. I have also an exposure to ISO 9002:2008 and ISO 14001. I have worked on Thiocolchicoside, Colchicoside, Hyoscine Butyl Bromide (anti-cholinergic), Methscopolamine Nitrate USP (anti-cholinergic), 10-DAB, Taxol, Colchicine, Etoposide (anti-neoplastic). I have filled patents on colchicoside, Deformylation of Thiocolchicoside (chemical process), Deproteination (Hydro-colloids) for foods (P&G). Besides working in the leading companies as research scientist, I have also worked as Professor of Organic Chemistry with Lovely Professional University for two years and ISTAR SPU Anand Gujarat for one year where I was heading the department of Organic chemistry. I had earned a project worth of 20 lacs from University Grants Commission New Delhi. While working for noveons I have very closely worked with International regulatory bodies before dispatching the R&D developed formulations to them for foods. I have also developed ice-cream formulations with close interactions with FDA officials and checked all the raw materials used therein for their pathogens, Pseudomonas, E. coli etc. I was very stringent scientist with regards to quality assurance and check. I have also supervised the Galactomannans processes for their microbiology checks and assuring by exposing them to gamma-irradiation and/or ethylene oxide/CO2 irradiation to minimize their total platelets counts, ensuring no chemical transformation of the moieties. While working as senior scientist with Alchem International Limited, I have closely interacted with QC/QA scientist to see the products get through stringent passing norms. I have also involved in designing DMF for Quinine Sulphate, 10-DAB. Along with their interpretation analysis by 1H-NMR Last but not least I have professed Organic chemistry/Natural products chemistry/medicinal chemistry for MSc, MPhil students. I am to be honoured very soon with the CSci and FRSC. I have also published papers in bio transformation of colchicine to 3-demethylcolchicine as a precursor for Thiocolchicoside. I have got 20 lacs sanctioned as a major project to research on Etoposide from UGC India in the capacity of Professor.
